Northern White Crane

Postby Crane_Fighter » Tue Aug 02, 2005 3:25 pm

Hi Grump,

I study southern Fujian White Crane and have been told that the difference between Northern and Southern is that the northern style is a lot harder. It has a lot more emphasis on kicks were as the southern style is lots of hand movements and only a few kicks.

Tibeten White crane is a northern style I believe...

What is the name of your style??

Actually Tibetan White Crane (Lama Pai / Bok Hok/ Hop Ga) is Southern Long Arm, not Northern.

Tibet on the map is also in Southwestern China. It's south of the Huang He.

Hey sean,

I dont think know what you are talking about as in your links it only mentions tibetan kung fu as either a northern style or a north western style.

For example:

Northern and Western Chinese long arm and kicking techniques, and Tibetan and Indian close range hand techniques and evasive footwork. However, the more time it spent in China, the more "Chinese" the system became.

These martial arts were Chinese, Tibetan, Mongolian and even Indian in origin and a good representation of the martial tradition in Western China.

Lion's Roar represented the vast tradition of Western Chinese martial arts.

Sorry dude but I rest my case...

Grump excuse this personnal debate!!!!

Grump,

Thats quite a long class three hours.
I go twice a week, 1 hour of Tai-Chi, 1.5 hours of Kung Fu and 0.5 hours of weapons.

Your class covers lots of different kicks and strikes, Many of them are covered in our class.

Nunchucks though are a japanese weapon derived from the three sectioned staff and so are not taught in our class as its strictly chinese.

Forms are taught pretty much straight away in our class, maybe you should talk to your teacher about learning some forms.

nunchucks (or however you spell them) are identical to a little-used chinese weapon called the small sweeper.

Northern and Southern factors

Postby Crane_Fighter » Sun Aug 07, 2005 3:39 pm

Hey Grump,

I have just been reading some of my Dr Yang, Jwing-Ming Essence of shoalin White Crane book and in chapter 1 he describes the difference between Northern and southern Kung Fu styles....

1. Northern Chinese prefer long range fighting, While southern chinese emphasize middle and short range fighting.

2. Northern styles emphasize more kicking techniques, while southern stylists specialize in more hand techniques and a limited number of low kicks.

3. Southern stylists focus on training a firm root, while northerner like to move and jump around.

pretty much what a had said...
