Dr. Yang's Taijiquan lineage ?

Postby bowser666 » Mon Mar 08, 2010 2:02 pm

I can't recall if this came up in a post yet, but since I learn Taijiquan from a student of Dr. Yang's , I was wondering what the lineage was ? I know it originated from Yang Ban Hou , but I was curious if anyone knows who it went through to get to Dr. Yang ? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I've feared asking this question for some time, because I thought if my inclination were off I would be something of a laughing stock. However, I feel that with this thread the time is actually right to ask it. Dr. Yang Jwing-Ming spells his surname with the same characters as those who were members of the historical Yang family. Is there a blood relation, or is this merely part of a pleasant coincidence? Naturally, regardless of the answer to this question my opinion of Dr. Yang and his impressive body of work will not change.

Hi, Sorry for the delay, I thought I answered this months ago...

No blood relation between Dr. Yang and the Yang-style Taiji family.

But, there is a direct link between the Yang family and the Taijiquan taught at YMAA schools, as explained in the article listed above.

Dr. Yang grew up in "Yang village" in Taiwan with hundreds of others with the last name Yang. It is a very common name.

In my opinion, Dr. Yang has probably done more to preserve the essence of the original Yang-style taijiquan than most, by translating and explaining the Yang-family poetry, most of which was written by Yang, Ban-Hou:

The Yang Family (Yang Zhenduo, Yang Jun et al.) claim to be the original family holders of Yang Taijiquan, NOT, "Yang style".

I'm not defending their claim here, but your statement suggests that you believe their claim to be incorrect. Of course, it could just be a slip of the keyboard! :D

Hi,

I don't know anything about the Yang Zhenduo claim.

But it seems clear that 99% of the family poetry to preserve taijiquan theory in a very detailed way was written mostly by Yang, Ban Hou, so...

http://ymaa.com/articles/yang-tai-chi-f ... ets-part-2

The Yang family poetry includes one document from Yang, Lu-Shan, forty-nine documents from Yang, Ban-Hou, and two from Yang, Chen-Fu.

I coincidentally just read an article concerning this subject you're at.

Okay, as stated, I wasn't trying to defend anyones' claims here :D

For myself I find the distinctions largely unhelpful. I practice taiji that is based on the principles of the Yang tree. Whether it comes from this branch or that branch or another branch is irrelevant. It is still Yang.

What Dr Yang, Jwing Ming is teaching is not what Yang, Banhou wrote about exactly, because he has flavoured it with, among other things, his knowledge of White Crane. Thus creating yet another branch of Yang taiji

That's how I see it, but I don't lose any sleep over it because it is of no real importance.

Good articles though!

Great article. Sam Masich has been a friend and student of Dr. Yang, Jwing-MIng since the 1980s.

Monsoon - good point. Every single teacher adds his or her own flavor to Tai Chi, and thus the art is alive.

But, you should also know that Yang, Ban Hou did discuss the bows (chest/spine), whipping power (jing), and point-striking, extensively. So, Dr. Yang's white crane kung fu, which is a soft-hard style, informs this aspect of Taijiquan practice well.
