Knee pain during horse stance

Postby joshuatan » Mon Dec 31, 2007 9:40 am

Hi all,

I'm practicing the Ba Duan Jin (Eight pieces of Brocade) and usually encounter some form of knee pain in my left knee during the portions that require the horse stance i.e the bow and arrow etc. Does anyone have any tips/suggestions to offer?

Thanks!

Hey

Don't stay to deep in your ma bu. I don't know how old you are but you're body must get that stance. Don't do it to fast!

You're bones must flow in eatch other.

It is hard to give a good suggestion with the few information provided. Did you have an injury in the knee before? Are you active and exercising regularly? Are you a young adult or senior? These factors does affect the assessment so, if you have persistent pain in the knee during your activities, I definitely recommend consulting a good health professional.

In general, and if you are training these exercises to regain health, it is always good to train progressively letting the body adjust. Rest should be included in the schedule.

Depending on the answers to the above question, you will get different options of action.

You're right Tony

I thought on a girl who met the martial arts when she get older. She hurt her knee. Its you're age; the doctor said and she stoped to train.

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies. I'm in my early twenties, exercise about four to five times a week running (practicing the Chi Running technique by Dreyer) and do some push ups, pull ups and ab wheels on the side. Have had no serious injury so far, but have been troubled from time to time with pain in the left knee. Depending on how I adjust my posture it goes away occasionally. The pain is more like a bright pain, something like bone against bone? I was in the army before so the intense (and sometimes downright harmful training) might have been a cause.

I would go see a Chinese doctor who knows Taiji, but as far as I know there are none where I am(in Durham, NC). I'd go see a Chinese doctor back home but my Chinese ain's good enough to tell him what's going on.

Thanks!

Bright pain is probably joint injury! Do not continue when you feel pain like that, you'll only injure yourself further. You need to recognize the difference between constructive pain (muscles) and destructive pain. That sounds destructive.

This is a common problem. Your feet MUST be aligned straight forward or you will torque the knee. Check that your toes point straight ahead, and your heels are also pointing straight back. Your knees in MaBu should always be above the feet, and not extended past the toes.

Otherwise, yes, see a Doctor.

Hope this helps!
