Staff recommendations

Postby pilotfish » Tue May 20, 2014 5:14 pm

Hello. Could someone please provide orientation on choosing a staff?

I plan on purchasing Dr. Yang's beginner staff DVD. I see different lengths, diameters, tapered/not tapered, rattan, waxwood, etc.

What differences do these factors make?

Does YMAA recommend or simply use any particular kind?

Thanks.

Having attended a few YMAA staff seminars this is my input on the subject.

I it is not tapered and I think it is about eyebrow height (although you might want to check that). Diameter and material? How heavy do you want it? YMAA stuff is not just for display so it would not be good to have it too thin but starting out with anything to heavy will slow your progress. I have both a rattan staff and oak staff. Oak seems better to me as it is thinner and the heaviness helps me slide it between my hands. The practice does not require the staff to be overy flexible so don't go with anything over floppy.

I hope this helps.

Start with a 6 foot bamboo staff, no taper. Old student
