YMAA is a traditional martial arts school, why do we use a ranking system? Why did Master Yang decide to use it?

master yang has said the reason for a ranking system was for a couple of reasons. one was because that is the way it is in america. people want to see a ranking system. the second is because we have busy lives where we work and such. We do not live with our masters training on a daily basis. therefore the ranking system also gives him a way to see where you are in his system and allow him a chance to keep some unity among the many schools we have.

twas also because when he started teaching abroad he would teach something to a person and another thing to another eprson and when he was back they had exchanged their stuff and Master Yang wasn't quite hapy about that.

So what is the ranking system in YMAA and how does it work ? At what rank are you considered a black belt ? At what rank are you considered a Sifu ?

The following information comes directly from the YMAA training manual. The ranking I discuss will be for the adult / external style (shaolin White Crane and Long Fist). The ranking system consists of 10 periods. Each period consists of "listed items" which must be passed before the student can move to the next period. Each level contains specific kicking techniques, hand forms, fighting forms, chin na, sequences and other qualifications which must be passed through testing which is done in front of a YMAA committee. There are 10 periods. If the student takes 6 months to pass each period he would become and Instructor after 5 years of hard training. One qualifies as a YMAA Assistant Instructor after he has passed the 6th period. After one becomes and Intructor he will then train with Master Yang for 5 more years of advanced training before qualifying as a Master. Rank shall be shown on the right side of the pants. The first stripe should be 4 inches down from the waist. The dimensions of each stripe should be 5/8 x 4 inches. When the student qualifies as an assistant instructor he uses 1 red stripe instead of 5 white stripes (he has now passed 6 periods so he wears 1 red stripe along with 1 white stripe just below the red one)
When are you considered a 'black belt'? the YMAA equivalent would be an assistant instructor while a qualified instructor (10 levels) would be considered a SIFU.

I hope I have given you some answers. Old Student
