Cracking Elbow Joints

Postby Griffin » Sun Jan 20, 2008 4:41 pm

Whenever I do pushups, both of my elbow joints crack every single time. They only crack when I am coming up during the pushup. I don't feel any pain, but I don't think my elbows are supposed to crack.

I'm only 14 years old. I didn't do anything that would hurt my elbow joints, so I have no idea why they are cracking. Like I said before, there is no pain so this might not be anything, but I don't think it's normal for my elbows to crack just by doing something as simple as a pushup. I'm especially confused because my elbows crack on every single pushup I do.

Try doing pushups on your knees, see if your elbows crack then. Try lessening the practice till you get to a point where you are not cracking, then keep going from there. Try to stay within the non-crack range and then you will find the non-crack range will increase with time. Stay diligent! :)

Hi Griffin...

You didn't mention anything about your workouts. Have you just started doing pushups or you are doing it regularly?
Reply soon so I can help you about it as I’m a sports physio.

Hi,

You can injure your elbow in a variety of ways, from overuse (athletic injuries) to an acute traumatic event (a fall or direct blow). Some common events that result in elbow fractures are these:

When you fall backward off a snowboard, for example, you may attempt to brace the fall with your arm outstretched and your hand open.

High-energy trauma can occur in an automobile or motorcycle collision.

Push ups are not that great anyway, they teach you a feeling of resistance and tension which can rob you of your jing.

Try similar postures but less motion. If you hold the low posture your elbow will not crack from motion but you will still get exercise.

elbow joints

one of my good ymaa friends used to have the same problem with his elbows around the same age as you. my knees use to click and be painful around the same age.

it could very well be a side effect of a period of growth. i'm not a pt, but try holding static push-ups to build up your stabilizing muscles. alternatively, try bench pressing with very low weight to build up your range of motion, adding a few pounds every week or every couple of weeks.
