An interesting comment on the Shoalin temple as it is post Peoples Republic

I trained at shaolin Temple and wrote a book, The Monk from Brooklyn, about my experience. It is tough training there. but other than the san da team NO ONE learns ANY fighting at all. and even just with my boxing skills i was able to beat all nearly all of the students fighting. if you add MMA, ground fight, they would stand NO CHANCE at all. there is NO ground fighting at Shaolin. There are some san da schools, and those guys fight well.

I have posted this video before but if you haven't seen it it's about the experience of Christian priest as he visits the Shaolin Temple.

Yes I love this film. Monk Shi Dejian in the above video at his mountain retread has some really genuine skill.
Another video about him

If you read "American Shaolin" http://www.amazon.co.uk/American-Shaoli ... 649&sr=8-1 you get a good idea of what it was like at the start of its revival. I think the monks then might have been more skilled than the latter crop as they started recruiting adults from Wushu squads to make up the numbers according to the book as this it was he found when he returned after a few years. The original crop of monks apparently new applications and could use it but they did not teach them or practise them and were only focused on their work as a display team. Apparently the American author is the one to blame for the San Da focuse as he used his position as a long term paying student to leverage Shaolin San Da training as he could not fight. Still this may have shifted focus from what was needed, a shift to traditional combat training.

Almost all the original crop of post Peoples Republic martial monks in the book are in this film.

I have to say Cung Le seems to be representing traditional arts within the MMA setting pretty well. He doesn't have much of the ego and facade yo see with other fighters.

MMA V Ninjutsu - Nasty Stuff!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbVlz-EcLRE

I like the historical research this guy does from real original documents. His main discovery seems to be that Ninjutsu is not a fighting art as such but a set of other skills (martial arts in the broader sense than actual had to hand fighting) that Samurai trained in addition to fighting skills. He has had a large number of historic manuals translated and published. Most people in the Ninjutsu world seem to hate him for it.

I think the fact that TMA and MMA often have totally different objectives or purposes is worth keeping in mind.

The Ground. The Dirty, Filthy, Dangerous Ground

Highly relevant when talking MMA for self defense.
