Change in UFC?

Postby John the Monkey mind » Sun May 30, 2010 9:23 am

Is it just me or are we beginning to see more UFC fighters with traditional stand up skill (karate)? I haven't followed it for a wile.

Machida among others.

I don't really follow UFC fighting much myself, but I recently heard about Horiguchi Kyoji. He seems to have a pretty much stand-up style, and does hold a rank in more traditional karate.

While I realize that your post is old, it looks like that trend is still very real. It may be telling that Horiguchi-san's biggest recent fight was against Louis Gaudinot, who also has a stand-up style and a karate background.

Martial arts is coming full circle now in UFC and other MMA circuits.

This is Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson. Good kicker.
5th degree black belt in Tetsushin ryu Kempo Karate.
He has 14 wins, 2 losses and 1 draw in the UFC.

Regardless of style, if you specialize in striking and kicking, your distance management has to be good.
YMAA Shaolin students know this "distance management" as "sense of distance".

Also Cung Le, an undefeated Chinese Sanshou fighter did extremely well fighting in MMA in Strike Force and UFC.

Hi Walter!

Yes, glad some traditional arts are getting represented well in UFC. Hope the trend continues.

Speaking of Cung Le! there is a talk of a San Shou video series in 2022, with an appearance by Cung Le! Working on that now...
