How long zhan zhuang?

Postby manaus » Thu Mar 07, 2013 1:01 pm

Hello,
first post here, so be merciful :)
Of course, a beginners question.
I'm trying to learn zhanzhuang, I've heard several suggestions, which are:

- As soon as you feel the minimum pain or discomfort, stop the practice;
- Keep a while, even if a bit discomfort.
- Keep going, ignore the pain: you can stop the practice after the pain disappears;
- Start at least with a 20 minutes practice minimum, 40 is better.

My sensations during practice are like this:

Keeping the balloon in front of chest, first the arms start to be heavy, but sensitive -- Heavy arms, I feel the tensions in the chest -- keeping the arms up begins to feel difficult -- starting to fight with the posture -- End with sore arms, a bit unsensitive.

This in my 10 minutes routine.

Thanks for any suggestion!

I would suggest you watch and follow the instructions in this series of YouTube videos.

There is an accompanying book out there that compliments the series very well and can be found at, among othe places, here!

The key to zhan zhuang is, as with much in internal arts, to take it slowly and steadily. Patience is vital, results will come by themselves in time.

Enjoy!

I agree with Monsoon's recommendation. Also, as with all meditation, ease your way into it and make gradual progress. If you go too hard at first and become discouraged, it can impact your motivation permanently.

Regarding the inevitable pain that will occur, you have to recognize the difference between 'constructive' pain, and 'destructive' pain. Listen to your body. relax. Concentrate. Meditate. breathe deeply.

Do some stretches for your back and shoulders to try and open these areas up, as they are typically the trouble spots.
