Building Qi

Postby dmattwads » Wed May 25, 2011 9:14 pm

At the clinic at my TCM school I was told that I am Qi deficient. Most of my qigong thus far has been balancing (8 brocades, inner smile, healing sounds), but not so much building. What are good qigong forms to build up more qi? I'm thinking Yi Jin Jing, and LDT reverse abdominal breathing?

i'd use herbal supplements known to build qi and also avoid practices that decrease it, and then continue what you mention you have already been doing

I am presently taking herbs that my TCM clinic gave me. It would seem that what I have already been doing hasn't been building enough qi for me though, which is why I was intrested in exploring Yi Jin Jing to do so, as Dr. Yang explains that it builds a lot of qi.

A simple way is to do basic zhanzhuang as a way to "build qi" as opposed to using herb supplements. Here are some postures:
1. Holding ball posture
2. Holding dantian
3. Holding ball with palm up
4. Hands outstretched to sides with palms up. note: slight bend at elbow crease as opposed to completely out stretched.

Actually one of the reasons I am contemplating a new approach is because I had been doing ZZ for about a year and it actually made me more tired, not sure why.

That sounds a little strange, dm. ZZ made you more tired? What was your schedule, what else do you have going on that's making you feel deficient? More to the other comment, what made them say your qi was deficient?

"Qigong forms to build more qi" - taiji, bagua, xingyi are all good moving forms that build qi. Try some bagua circle walking holding the ball in front of the dantien and "walk with the dantien." (try palms flat down if you need to work on smooth walking motions.)

The specific things that yeniseri mentioned are also good for building qi, especially if you add the LDT focus of embryonic breathing. Different hand postures change the focus of the qi - try holding the ball in front of the dantien after moving forms; I've also had excellent results with the palms up thing he described (also a good component of the stuff from Chris Matsuo that trunk has posted up the last few months@ttbs.)
This bit will especially help in building qi - Do the qi-ball at the dantien, grow and shrink it with the breath, quarter to golf ball size and back - maintain singular focus there and it will get hot and you'll know you're doing it correctly, and that will absolutely build more qi. Let it fade in stillness afterwards. Do that in the morning to build and in the evening to sublimate and integrate. Working towards good longevity breathing will help that too.
