Dan Tien Location!

Postby Shinobibeatz1234 » Tue Aug 24, 2010 9:54 am

My Question is where are the 3 Dan Tien Really located? I'm not that familiar with all the organs in the human body, so sometime when some qigong dvd and books describe something about the Solar Plexus it just go over my head because i cant locate it and i don't want to be doing the exercise wrong and getting hurt

Lower, at about the culmination of the small intestine, 2 inches below the navel and in about the center.

Solar Plexus is just below the sternum:

"Middle dantien" = heart center. The heart's EM field extends about 2.5 feet out from the body!

Upper = midbrain, pineal/pituitary.

Dont worry about the uppers for the time being. Focus on the lower, learn to do embryonic breathing. It is more easily 'felt' and accessed and you have the most muscular influence over this area, so its what you will initially get the most feedback from. By cultivating that area you'll start to enhance your levels of qi and that will provide context and juice for you to refine other centers later on. In establishing a smooth breath, that will carry on with good practice and eventually you will breathe like that without trying - what that does is send a calming, regulating signal up the vagus nerves, which helps regulate the midbrain function and helps make you happier, healthier. Try to reach a first breath milestone of a 30 second breath, 15 in, 15 out. My metabolism goes wild when I'm hitting a minute! ;)

So then the lowe dan tien does not just store energy, but balances all sorts of other things as well such as the emotions, and ect...?

Well, I'm venturing a little out of the realm of my expertise with stuff like where emotions are stored - they're stored all over the place afaik but some store certain things, e.g. I've heard of some theories about repressed anger coming out as lust and so forth. But yes, having a well cultivated breath has many positive implications, building all the way up. A well cultivated huiyin wont let energy leak, a well cultivated dantien will store well, a well cultivated diaphragm will let the breath be smooth and will also be gentle on the heart, which will buoyantly radiate cultivated in the absence of tension, and really, the heart is the major key between a strong lower and powerfully focused upper - for if you're going on the way up, spending some good time on each, above will have the support from below.

Could you elaborate about supressed anger becoming lust? I've never heard that, but would like to know more.

It is always better to follow the dantian location of one's teacher!
Through the ages, there have been at least 7 dantian locations with the lower dantian (qihai) being the most consistantly named though some have allocated it to "areas' (plexus) as oppoesed to a 'point' location.

The lower dan tian is an area of increased conscious awareness within the abdomen, located in the most dense and sensitive part of the enteric nervous system in your guts. This is also called the second brain.

Both the upper and lower brain originate from a structure called the neural crest, which appears and divides during fetal development to form both thinking machines. The lower brain is like a microprocessor for the upper brain, and they work in tandem through the spinal cord (chong mai).

The enteric nervous system regulates the digestive system, from the esophagus to the anus. With 100 million nerves, the enteric nervous system is as complex as the spinal cord, but we know less about it. Many of its structures and chemicals parallel those of the upper brain. It has sensory and motor neurons, information processing circuits, glial cells, and all the major neurotransmitters: dopamine, serotonin, acetylcholine, nitric oxide and norepinephrine. Also, benzodiazepines, chemicals of the family of psychoactive drugs that includes Valium and Xanax.

I have a question about the dan tien. Does doing dan tien breathing convert your sexual energy into chi? Is that why Dr. Yang says to not do qigong too soon or after having sex? If it does convert sexual energy into chi, is that then a good way to cool your jets?

Personal objective viewpoint with experiential knowledge is a far better judge for one to come to an honest appraisal of dissonant technologies, which are more confusing and prone to disuse.

If one takes the view of "we all possess qi (chi), then one can never turn sexual energy into qi because it is already present, i.e. chi. If anything, sublimation and some sort of personal control over sexual stuff is the key.
Self discipline, as foolish and vague as it is, begins within oneself as opposed to some external source to control it.

If one has a "low desire/low sexual energy" then it may be less of a problem. If the desire level is "high", then personal discipline may be more of a test to make better, the qi" (efficiency and based 'yang sheng' concepts) and incorporate into one's lifesphere.
