Sleepy after Qigong

Postby dmattwads » Tue Mar 02, 2010 12:47 pm

Lately I have increased the amount of times a day I do Qigong, as opposed to doing fewer sessions for a longer time, I'm doing more sessions of a shorter duration. What I have noticed is that I am feeling better, but after doing Qigong lately I get very sleepy, even though I get plenty of sleep at night. I'm not sure if this is related to Qigong, but since I get sleepy right after finishing it does seem that way to me. Any ideas on why?

Hi D,
Are you doing the same short sequence each time, or are you doing many different types throughout the day?

This past week or two I have been waiting to begin a new job, so I have a lot of time on my hands, but I get bored with doing the same set all the time, so I have been doing several different kinds of sets mainly to break up the monotany, and also partly as an experiment to see how I like the various forms.

heh - a question I asked a friend recently when she said a certain form was soooo borning - what is boring?

Yi leads qi - if your mind is scattered, your qi follows.

I thought you might be doing a lot of different sets. This may be the problem. I have been investigating the effects of all the sets that i was doing. Their effects on me, and with each other. Some really don't mix.

IMHO it is good to have something that stays the same, a unifying thread running through your different sets. For me, that is the spine wave. I have even snuck this move into my Kundalini spine set.
The reason people often say you should stick to one system is due to it's strong reinforcing effect on the body. If you do one different set after another it is like being pulled in many different directions.

If at work i do some spine waveing, within a few seconds i feel my energy levels increasing, and energy begining to circulate, because i do it so often the effect is magnifying all the time. But if i were to do a different move each time the effect would not nearly be so great.
If you find a few sets that work well together to regulate the body's energy, and give a complete workout, that would be best.

I am still experimenting with my own practise, but i would hazard a guess and say that it was the constant change to your system of regulating the qi, via different sets that is causing your tiredness.

Thanks for your reply and I think your theory definately sounds plausable, expecially considering that, that is what came to mind first, based upon your own experience. During my little experiment I did notice though that the forms that I tend to like/gravitate towards the most are ones in which there is a lot of walking around like Wild Goose, Tai Chi, ect...
As far as what is boring, to me at least boring is undifferintiated repitition, like doing only one set day after day.

Along the lines of what has previously been discussed here, I have noticed that if I do a new form or Qigong or even Yoga for that matter, or one that I have not done for a while, that I notice that I feel sleepy after doing it. Is it related, and if so, why might that be?

just like with any other exercise, working something that hasnt been worked at in a bit will result in a little more fatigue than something that has been exercised a little more regularly.
