Non-physical organs Chinese vs Indian tradition

Postby dmattwads » Sun Apr 05, 2009 4:41 pm

Something I have been contemplating lately is the connection (or maybe disconnection) between the Chinese point of view on non-physical organs such as Dan Tiens, Triple Burner, Acupoints, ect... comparted to the Indian Chakra system. In general I have noticed that almost every Chakra in the Indian system has a related point in the Chinese system but they tend to be viewed and described differently.
For example the Lower Dan Tien and the Sacral Chakra seem to be in around the same location in the body. Yet though the Sacral Chakra has to do with sexuality , but I have not heard of any sort of connection in that way to the Lower Dan Tien?
Or what about the Triple Burner? Thats non-physical too, is there any relation to the Chakra system?
But specifically lets say your views and attitudes toward sexuality are not balanced, can breathing into your Dan Tien help with that as it is located where the Sacral Chakra is?

Do the Dan Tiens have emotions associated with them like the organs do? I know the lower dan tien stores chi, the middle makes fire or post birth chi, and the upper has to do with your mind, but are there other aspects associated with them?
Also do the dan tiens have any correlation to the burners of the tripple burner? Doesn't the middle burner produce chi from food and air, and isn't that what the middle dan tien does as well?
Just some questions

its tough trying to mix together terminology from disparate systems...there's going to be some overlapping and mixing of terminology, some will have applicability that others wont...

It is said that people understand things based on ignorance, experience and perception or lack therof and call it experience and.or knowledge with degree of ignorance permeating both knowledge or experience!

My thoughts exactly but organs are physical entities while chakras are 'physiological centres'. As I was taught and as I imagine I understand, it is the lower dantian (qihai) that makes "fire" and complementary to mingmen!
Dr Yang's books are an excellent start so it may be better to do self study and from that go to a good teacher to learn and build from that foundation.

I just thought I'd share a few recent observations from my personal practice and experience on the Chinese Qigong approach verses the Indian Chakra / Yoga perspective.

As my main goal right now is dealing with emotional issues, and my primary approach to this goal was mainly from the Qigong / Meridian system approach I most certainly got results, but felt that after a while that I had reached a point where some issues were simply not improving no matter what I did or how much I did Qigong wise.

As of this week I decided to focus on the chakra system and approach to various issues I have been trying to deal with, and so far have been extremely pleased with the results I have gotten. The main method I have used to access the chakras has been using stones and crystals placed over the various chakras. To be honest I have been extremely surprised with the results I have gotten.

Are there any Qigong forms that deal with the chakras? If anyone has any observations or experience with this I would be interested in hearing about it. I also understand that Reiki deals with chakras, but am not very well informed about Reiki.

Does anyone know what the function of the Middle Dan Tien is? I know the lower dan tien stores chi, and the upper houses the shen, so what does the middle one do?

experientially, still working on this one...smoothing, softening, begining to understand what opening in this context means. it seems to be trickier to open up and soften than the upper or lower, but that's just my experience...it seems that the upper and the lower wont be able to flow completely into one another without the middle being sufficiently worked on and open.

in what little I was able to find about the middle dan tien, most sources put it in the middle of the chest and say it has to do with emotions. From the yoga side, the heart chakra is in the middle of the chest and has to do with emotions, so would these two perhaps be the same thing?

I'm going to assume the answer is yes, but does anyone know specifically if Qigong works on the chakra's as well?

would it not? :) think of it as an integrated whole.

(unless its a specific exercise for something specific, i.e. something specially focused on the wisdom eye or something...)
