I read a bit about it on tm.org and wiki - other than the specific sounds, it doesnt really sound like too much is different from qigong meditation I've read about. Am I missing something?

Same subject, same theory, different cultural approach.
Different names too.

Basically the two are as different as Chinese Gongfu vs Japanese MA.
ie. in principle the same (because they share the same source) but have external (literally that word to avoid confusion) differences due to cultural differences.
Do not try !

Do, or do not !
