Can't remember a saying about the three internal styles

Postby citrus538 » Thu May 05, 2005 7:19 am

I remember hearing some saying about the three internal Chinese arts. I don't remember the details, but I was hoping somebody would be able to help me out.

It starts with a xing yi, a tai ji, and a ba gua practitioner walking together on a road when they encounter a large boulder blocking their way. The ba gua person circles around it, the tai ji person does something else, and the xing yi guy destroys the boulder by hitting it.

Does this ring any bells?

the taiji fighter scratched the ball and had a beer. happy cinco de mayo!! maybe he took one look at the boulder, turned around and walked in the opposite direction until arriving on the other side of the boulder. or maybe he appealed to the boulder's reasonable side and politely asked it to move. or maybe the boulder was his dan tien. i hear that could get in the way of any fighter...i really have no idea.
here's another one: xingyi is a throwing knife, bagua is a boomerang, and taiji is a bola.
and yet another: xingyi fortifies the center, bagua turns the center, and taiji changes the center.

If memory serves it was,"The Taiji practitioner stood and waited for the boulder to crumble away, the Bagua practitioner walker aroung it and the Xingyi practitioner pounded a hole in it." The idea being that Taiji only acts when action is necessary, preferring instead to wait and watch and defend with the least amount of effort until the problem can be solved with the smallest movement and the least energy. A Bagua practitioner never approaches a problem head on and instead walks in circles or angles, moving constantly to find the most advantageous situation. And the Xingyi practitioner rather than concerning himself with the problem destroys the source of the problem.

What I find most amazing, is how they compliment eachother so beautifully, and how the all derive from the same exact principles.

Thanks, I remember being extremely impressed by that saying and it really bothered me that I couldn't recall it well enough to tell people who had questions about internal MA's.
