I agree, and it is a poor indictment of the state of practice in the West. Whenever I am in China, no matter the location, I have always found people to be enthusiastic about a bit of playing with strangers. Whether that is simply something to do with the novelty of being a foreign player or not I do not know (and don't really care because it is such fun, and is done without any animosity). All for free too - which is kinda the point.
