Song of Eight Diagram Palm

八卦掌,走为先,收即放,去即还,变转虚实步中参。
In Eight Diagram Palm, Walking is first. Collect “Strength,” and release it immediately, Remove yourself and return an attack immediately, “Turning,” with random steps to change the situation.

走如风,站如钉,扣摆转换步法清。腰为纛,气为旗,眼观六路手足先。
“Walking,” as quickly as the wind, stopping as if nailed in place, Hooking clearly displays Turning-Changing Footwork. Your waist is the “banner,” your Qi is the “Flag,” your eyes watch the “Six Paths,” while your hands and feet always arrive first.

行如龙,坐如虎,动似江河静如山。阴阳手,上下翻,沉肩坠肘气归丹。

脚打七,手打三,手脚齐进莫迟缓。胯打走,肩打撞,委身挤靠暗顶膝。
The legs issue 70% of your Strength, the hands issue 30%, they must both Advance simultaneously,
neither can be slow or late. The thighs strike while Walking, the shoulders’ strike “Collides,” moving
the body in close to “Bump,” hides a Knee Thrust.

高不扼,低不拦,迎风接进最为先。数语妙诀掌中要,不用纯功亦枉然。
Don’t guard the “Upper,” don’t block the “Lower,” just “face the wind,” Connecting and Entering are of vital importance. Analyzing the mysterious secrets of the Palm is useless without the genuine achievement of practice.

Hello again, everyone. For the first post on Ba Gua Theory, I've chosen the Song of Ba Gua Zhang. It's a short, simple, & straight forward introduction to the features of the style. "Walking," here refers to the special Walk of Ba Gua Turning Palm. By using Turning Steps with the Walking Method it is possible to prepare a counter while evading, thus both "storing & releasing," & "evading & countering," at the same time.

走如风,站如钉,扣摆转换步法清。腰为纛,气为旗,眼观六路手足先。
“Walking,” as quickly as the wind, stopping as if nailed in place, Hooking clearly displays Turning-Changing Footwork. Your waist is the “banner,” your Qi is the “Flag,” your eyes watch the “Six Paths,” while your hands and feet always arrive first.

The simplest & safest way to face the opposite direction is "Turning Body Hooking Step," one of the basic step methods of Ba Gua Zhang. Ultimatly, the waist controlls the movement of the body & limbs. "Six Paths," refers to three dimensional space: "Upper & Lower," "Front & Back," "Left & Right." The hands & feet must work together to guarantee victory. The power is full when the hands & feet arrive together. When the steps are small, the hands are kept extended, & the waist controls & unites all movement, then your hands & feet will always be faster than your opponent's.

行如龙,坐如虎,动似江河静如山。阴阳手,上下翻,沉肩坠肘气归丹。
Moving like a Dragon, and sitting like a Tiger, “Movement,” resembles a great river, and “Stillness,” resembles a mountain. In “Yin Yang Hands,” when “Reversing Upper and Lower,” sink the shoulder and drop the elbow to return the Qi to the abdomen.

Movement should be smooth & continuous, stillness shoul be stable & sunken. In addition, movement must be lively, flexible, variable, & continuous, like a dragon; while stillness must be calm, relaxed, settled, & stable, like a huge mountain or a tiger waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike. In the Middle Basin Walking, the basic posture is "Yin Yang Hands," sometimes called "Old Monk Lifts Bowl," & "Triangle Hands Posture." "Reversing Upper & Lower," means using any motion that causes the relative positions of the hands to"swap," or change places with each other. The proper posture ("drop the shoulder, & sink the elbow") cause the qi to follow the motions of the hands & return to the lower abdomen for storage. By dropping the shoulder, the upper body can relax & enter a more stable posture. Sinking the elbow connects the arms to the torso & assists the shoulder, chest & back alignments.

When practice accords with the rules, the qi naturally accumulates & strengthens the body. The "Six Harmonies," are the key principles for an orderly & quick maturation of the skill. The Inner Three Harmonies are "Form & Intent," "Stillness & Motion," & "Qi & Strength." The Outer Three Harmonies are "Eyes & Heart," "Waist & Body," & "Hands & Feet." Meticulous practice of Hooking & Swinging Steps will bring the footwork under the control of the waist. "Advance & Retreat," here is a reference to Attack & Defense. As always, the waist is in complete control of all movements.

The hands & feet must arrive simultaneously at their respective targets. In addition, more than half of the power for any given technique is generated by the action of the legs & waist. Less than a third of the power comes from the upper body. Again, all parts of the body must work together & "arrive" together. When close to the enemy for "Bumping/Leaning" (靠 kao) attacks remember to add a knee to increase the effect. The thighs strike the enemy below, the shoulders strike the enemy above. In either case, the proximity makes knee attacks very difficult to deal with.

The essence of Ba Gua Zhang is mobile & adaptable footwork. Don't block, don't guard, just Walk around the enemy's attacks & return the favor. "Connecting & Entering" means the art of bypassing the defenses of others with deft skill. Part of the "Vital Importance" comes from your own increased awareness of space & sense of vigilance. The Three Joints of the Upper Section are the basis of both Entering & Defending. The Three Sections of the Torso outline the basic targets of Attack & Defense. This is the foundational idea behind "Crossing Hands" exercises. The last line of the song contains the most essential piece of advice concerning martial arts: everything else is meaningless without practice!

混元一气培根本,四正四隅按八方。
The Primordial One Qi cultivates the basis,

落步三盘掰扣步,发行四梢弯转强。
Falling Step, Three Sections, Swinging Hooking Steps,
The Four Tips issue strength through Bending & Turning.

前掌虚实牛舌样,后手埋伏肘下藏。
The lead hand is both Empty & Solid, with an Ox Tongue shape,

内讲五行分四梢,外有五行眼法强。

A Soft Body Transforms infinite power,
High or Low, Near or Far, with unlimited capacity.

腰法要合分四梢,眼法要合定八方。
The Waist Method must harmonize the Four Tips,
The Eye Method must harmonize the order of the Eight Directions.

手法要合情变化,用法要合左右防。
The Hand Method must harmonize feeling & variation,
The Application Method must harmonize left & right in order to defend.

膀法要合阴阳变,身法要合扭转强。
The Arm Method must harmonize with Yin Yang to transform,
The Body Method must harmonize Twisting & Turning strongly.

胯法要合挨身使,膝法要合进身旁。
The Hip Method must harmonize with Close Body usage,
The Knee Method must harmonize with advancing the body to the side.

步法要合进退快,闪展腾挪腰偏强。
The Footwork must harmonize quick Advance & Retreat,
When Dodging, Extending, Rising, or Shifting, the waist inclines forcefully.

头打去意随腰使,起落总须站中央。
In usage, the strikes follow the waist’s movements,
Either Rising or Falling, always stand with center.

脚踏中门抢地位,掌行直穿上下忙。
Tread the Center Gate to steal position,
The palm moves in with quick Upper & Lower Straight Penetrating.

拳打起落头手挡,肘打去意占胸膛。
When Hand Striking, the lead hand blocks whether Rising or Falling,
When Elbow Striking, aim for the chest.

背紧胸空提谷道,肩打胯击并阴阳。
Tighten the back, empty the chest, & lift the “gu dao,”
Shoulder & Hip Striking combine Yin & Yang.

身法全凭盖世气,两手只在胸前藏。
The Body Method maintains & depends on unrivaled Qi,

八卦先从转掌起,精研其法乃得真。
Ba Gua originally started with Turning Palm,
Thoroughly research its Method to obtain its truth.

头顶肩垂行气下,直到丹田出入匀。
Raise the head, hang the shoulders, & move the Qi downward,
Evenly Exiting & Entering the Dan Tian.

臂间要分三节用,身法要停四梢匀。
The Arm Method must distinguish the Three Sections in use,
The Four Tips are balanced when the body’s motion stops.

步走圆圈分八卦,跟随身手一团神。
The steps walk a circle divided by Eight Diagrams,
Following the body & hands with one spirit.

元气须在肛门提,猿臂熊膀龙虎身。
The Original Qi must rise from the anus,
Ape Arms, Bear Shoulders, Dragon & Tiger Body.

二人对手腕中求,动手制胜步法分。
When two people fight, they seek victory in the wrist.
In a fight it is meticulous footwork that controls victory.

上下前后左右使,肩肘膝胯里外轮。
Upper & Lower, Front & Back, Left & Right must all be used.
The shoulders, elbows, knees, & thighs are round inside & out.

腿法出腿不见腿,八卦起落脚为根。
The Leg Method is : “Put forth the leg without it being seen.”
In Ba Gua, the “Rising & Falling Leg,” is the root.

The Front, Back, Left, & Right have Thirty six variations.
The Horizontal Leg is advantageous, Lifting & Cutting are real.

When practicing, emphasis is placed on the following, relating to the Three Basins/三盤 - San Pan Theory:

The arms should “roll, drill, struggle, & wrap.”
The waist should “twist, whirl, walk, & turn.”
The feet should “rise, fall, swing, & hook.”

The waist being the director is stressed as the hands follow the turning of the waist, the feet follow the waist’s movement, the waist strikes and the waist removes.

Baguazhang's gong fu uses Walking & Turning as the foundation, a Whole Body equipped with Three Shapes, its Method could be described in its entirety as Dragon, Monkey, & Eagle: Walking is like a Dragon, Returning Body is like a Monkey, Changing Forms is like an Eagle. Mud Wading Steps with Scissor Legs, settled as if sitting in a sedan chair.

八反說/Eight Reverses Theory

八反者, 與尋常拳家不同, 反其道而行之, 獨到專具之法也。
The Eight Reverses are distinct from ordinary boxing schools, they act in a diametrically opposite way, only by becoming expert can you possess this method.

第一反/The First Reverse:
進步先進前步, 退步先退后步。
Advance Step first advances the front step, Retreat Step first withdraws the rear step.

第二反/The Second Reverse:
入則直步, 出則彎步, 跨則横步, 回則倒步。
Enter with a Straight Step, go out with a Cuved Step, stride with a Lateral Step, return with an Inverting Step.

第三反/The Third Reverse:
人則五花八門, 我則以靜待動。
People use Five Flowers & Eight Gates, I use Use Stillness to Wait for Movement.

第四反/The Fourth Reverse:
人則拳打腳踢, 我則穿掌掩肘。
People use Fist Strikes & Leg Lifts, I use Penetrating Palm & Covering Elbow.

第五反/The Fifth Reverse:
人則使梢擊人, 我則使梢先使根。
People usually use the tip to strike a person, I use To Use the Tip First Use the Root.

第六反/The Sixth Reverse:
人則用拳變之掌, 我則用直伸出掌。
People usually apply Fist Variations as their Palms, I then apply Straight Extending Palm.

第七反/The Seventh Reverse:
人則回拳回身方能對后, 我則動步便對八方。
People use Circling Fist & Returning Body to face the rear, I use Moving Steps to quickly face the Eight Directions.

第八反/The Eighth Reverse:
人則挺身直進, 我則掌到步随。

三盤内外須純練,前後高低混打全。一日無間三歲半,保能發手倒山巔。

Propping Fist Lifting Palm is like wind & smoke, Chopping, Penetrating, Grabbing, & Controlling patterns are valuable from the oblique. When thrusting out or pulling back the legs are controlled & firm, Hooking, Moving, Wrapping, & Pulling are linked to Chopping & Paring. The Three Basins internally & externally must be genuinely trained, front & rear, high & low mixed strike everywhere. After three full years without missing a single day, you're guaranteed the ability to overthrow a mountain.

眼之歌訣/Eye Song

兩眼圓睜若朗星,頭端審視更分明。瞻前顧後疾如電,展動周旋似轉輪。
秒定敵人身手腳,乘虛攻擊莫留情。臨場對敵人難進,全在雙眸一團神。

The two eyes are full & open like bright stars, so the head may examine & watch clearly. Look out for the front & look after the rear as swift as lightning, use movement to contend like turning wheel. The second the enemy fixes his body, hand, or foot, take advantage of his emptiness to attack without mercy. When facing an enemy advancing is difficult, unless you completely gather the spirit into both eyes.

身之歌訣/Body Song

頭端面正手平分,直竪身昂腿護陰。斜立足分丁八步,勢如跨馬彎弓形。
腿腳不浮身便穩,平起平落移動靈。足動腳跟同進退,肩投腰趁臀齊行。
翻身腹縮隨舒卷,偏閃騰挪勢勢承。練習如常寡敵眾,横衝直撞莫停留。

The head & face are upright with the hands evenly divided, vertically erect body rises while the legs protect the Yin. Stand obliquely with the feet separated into Ding or Ba steps, the appearance is like riding a horse or stretching a bow in form. When the legs & feet don't float the body is stable, level rising & level falling allows for nimble movement. When the feet move the legs follow along in Advance & Retreat, the shoulders, waist, & buttocks simultaneously move. In Overturning Body withdraw the abdomen following stretching out & rolling up, obliquely dodge with a shifting pattern to continue the momentum. Practice as if you're alone against many enemies, thrusting sideways & crashing forwards without stopping.

法之歌訣/Method Song

個中奧妙在深玄,掌在師傳學在專。掌法千般學不盡,機關百種卒難言。
水到渠成三載力,鋼須純練始削堅。總之熟練能生巧,處處相承節節連。

Profound subtlety exists within the depths of mystery, the Palm is transmitted by teacher & studied until expert. The Palm Methods have many categories to endlessly study, the many schemes are difficult to discuss completely. Where water flows a canal is formed after three years effort, steel must be refined before it can cut strongly. In short, mature practice gives birth to skill, little by little every part complements the others & is linked.

步之歌訣/Step Song

兩膝彎步力自然,屈前直后練成堅。之從順閃騰挪步,
玄經斜擊反回圈。翻復旋風肩平硬,膝雄跟端带勾臁。

Both knees curve & step with natural strength, bend the front & straighten the rear training to become solid. When zigzagging follow Dodging with Shifting Step, stealthily pass through while obliquely striking to return to turning around the circle. Overturning & returning like a whirlwind, the shoulders stay level & firm, with strong knees carrying & connecting the lower legs.

八卦掌九宫說/Baguazhang's Nine Palaces Theory

(一)九字訣/(1) Nine Character Secret

九宫者,順勇直巧妙連狠急功九字也。順者,自然也;勇者,果決也;直者,發必中也;巧者,千斤不費力也;妙者,出手不見形也;連者,沾連不停也;狠者,動手不容情也;急者,緊捷也;功者,心一動由内發出也。九宫明,則上乘法得矣。上法者以手足為奇,進法者以手足為妙,起手錄丹鳳朝陽,起步以搶步采打。總之,三節要明,四梢要齊,五行要備,六合要合,身法要活,手足要連随其遠近一動而至也。

The Nine Palaces are Shun/Smooth, Yong/Brave, Zhi/Straight, Qiao/Clever, Miao/Subtle, Lian/Link, Hen/Fierce, Ji/Quick, Gong/Merit; these are the Nine Characters. Smooth is natural; Brave is unwavering; Straight is sure to hit the mark when issued; Clever is a thousand jin doesn’t expend much effort; Subtle is the shape of the outgoing hand isn’t seen; Link is touch & link without end; Fierce is hitting people can’t have emotions; Quick is victory is close at hand; Merit is as soon as the Xin moves the inside issues. When the Nine Palaces are understood then the first class method has been obtained. The Superior Method uses the hands & feet unorthodoxly, the Advancing Method uses the hands & feet subtly, the rising hand copies a Red Phoenix facing the sun, the rising step uses Stealing Step Plucking Strike. In short, the Three Sections must be clear, the Four Tips must be even, the Five Phases must be ready, the Six Harmonies must join, the Body Method must be lively, the Hands & Feet must Link & vary according to the distance so that they arrive in a single move.

(二)走九宫要訣/(2) Walking the Nine Palaces Essential Secret

每樁畫一直徑約五尺的圈,按八步一圈走轉,每步一卦,可使步法僵滯者通靈,身法拘拗者順暢。要訣有九:艮頂圆,松墜探,緊空滿,溜疊恬,溜臀直,呼吸貫,縮提掩,平坐彎,斜擰轉。

Each stake marks off a verticle with a diameter of approximately five chi around it, according to the Eight Steps one should Turn throughout Circle Walking, each step being a single Gua, it can cause Footwork that is rigid & sluggish to become sensitive, a Body Method that is inflexible & stiff to become smooth & unhindered. There are nine essential secrets: bluntly thrust up against the circle, relax & drop to stretch forward, strictly empty & fill, calmly slip away repeatedly, slide the buttocks erect, inhale & exhale thread together, contract to lift or cover, level sits & bends, inclined twists & turns.

作戰三法說/Zuozhan San Fa Shuo - Three Fighting Methods Theory

人來我解,而後還擊,叫互進法;人來我接,同時還擊,叫堵截法;人來我脫身化之,化中有打,叫脫身化影法。三法這中,一法勝一法。只有第三種最為深奧,需功夫練到爐火純青之時,方可用好此法。

When someone Comes I Dissolve, & then hit back is called the Mutual Advance Method; When someone Comes I Connect, & Simultaneously strike back is called the Stopping & Intercepting Method; When someone Comes I escape & change, & there is a strike within the change is called the Escaping Body Changing Shadow Method. Among these Three Methods, a single Method can defeat a single method, but there is an order among the three types that is most profound, you need to train your Kung fu until the 'stove has turned bright green,' that's the prescription for properly applying this Method.
