learn 24 form

Postby vvanesse59 » Tue Oct 11, 2011 11:25 am

WOULD SOMEONE GIVE ME A TIME FRAME IT MIGHT TAKE TO LEARN 24 FORM ENOUGH TO PERFORM THE SET. I JUST WOULD LIKE SOME IDEA WHETHER IT COULD BE LEARNED WELL ENOUGH IN 12 WEEKS AT A COMMUNITY COLLEGE SETTING OF ONE HOUR ONCE A WEEK FOR 12 WEEKS. I REALIZE YOU WOULD NOT EXPECT THE STUDENT/ME/ TO KNOW A LOT OTHER THAN JUST BEING ABLE TO GET THROUGH THE SET BUT I AM CURIOUS IF THAT IS A REALISTIC TIME FRAME. THANKS

If you're after getting through the set and retaining the basic movements then it can be done as long as you practice what you have learned each day.

Thanks, that is pretty much what I am looking for info about. That is about the level I would expect and understand that it requires practice, practice, practice beyond the instruction. ANYONE ELSE'S THOUGHTS OR ACTUAL EXPERIENCE?

I met a guy who got the sequence down in a day. Admittedly he already had a martial background and he just had the movement not the inner meaning. You are correct that it is all meaningless without practice and understanding. Practice the form but also read up on the art and the concepts.

Sadly you will need further lessons to learn pushing hands and get beyond a basic level. Still you should be able to make progress and attending seminars may be a good way of reviewing your Taiji form, even basic Taiji still has health benefits.

I have been told by a number of people over the years that the 24 form is not very good as its a modern show form rather than a traditional composition however I think its a fair place to start. You could always work from a book and DVD on the 108 Yang form or 108 Wudan at a later date. I have found getting the basic concepts of movement and the foundation is the Challenge. Once you have them learning form is both easier and less significant.

I practice the 108 form and that took-is taking a lot of time to learn. I am still trying to make it respectably good. Luckly I have the time to go to about 8 hours of Taiji classes a week and better still live I close to a YMAA school :D

Taiji is well worth learning even if you have to do take a roundabout rout to do so.

The learning pattern you are referencing is 'modern' in that it would be about 2 months to learn the form sequence to 1 year based on how you learn, digest the information and make that a lifelong hobby. I am not saying it takes 2 months to master 24 shi taijiquan.
Daily practice or every other day about 2-3 hours for 2 months along with the basics:
a. zhanzhuang
b. taijizhuang
c. individual posture training
d. form

Thanks to all for responses. It is my desire to just learn the basic form at this time (first things first) but I expect this is to be a lifelong learning process. I was just wondering if 12 weeks was reasonable to get the basic form down -- daily practice will be done between actual instructor time. Again, thanks I believe you have confirmed my belief.
