Feeling a pumped up and an electrical charge after TJQ?

Postby jfraser » Wed Apr 02, 2008 11:40 am

I have noticed, increasingly over the last couple of months, a sensation/feeling of my muscles being "pumped up" like after I have been lifting weights(but,I have not been pumping iron), after finishing the form set I practice, or even part of it, if I am working on difficult sections over and over again.

And there is also a sensation of a kind of moving electical charge under my skin and around my skin, especially, in my arms, hands, shoulders, around my shoulder blades, in my thighs. and somewhat less in my pelvis.

Any member have experiences like this, and understand what is going on. :o :) :?: :)

I never had sensations like my muscles were pumped up. That seems a bit odd. You should be building tendon strength, not muscle strength.

As to the other sensations, I had them for a while and thought they were qi. My teacher told me that they were, but just localized qi. It wasn't the xiantian or houtian qi that I was told was more powerful. Eventually those localized sensations went away.

Later when I was given a more specific practice, I found the xiantian qi and it was much stronger and I could duplicate the experience again and again. It also followed the yi like the classics say. It wasn't some tingling or just some warmth. It had a specific feeling.

Just my 2 cents.

The heavy, muscularly "pumped up" sensation implies that a sufficient volume of intrinsic energy has been activated and mobilized internally within the adjacent organ meridian channels and muscle meridian channels which supply the muscle tissues. This phenomenon is usually felt as a "moving electrical charge", essentially a bio-electrical energy streaming or energy flow. Such energy flows in turn attract and lead the electrical components of the blood to generate a greater volume of blood circulation through the blood vessels which supply the muscles as well.

It all boils down to simple physics and biochemistry.

And that's his opinion. I would disagree.

But you really need to ask your own teacher. Only he knows what you're training and if the feedback your getting is the right response.

It is indeed localized Qi, which is stored in the tendons. It is the "kind" of Qi which is experienced in Wai-dan Qigong exercises. These exercises are used to familiarize the student with a first encounter of the Qi-phenomenon and are best felt in the limbs.

Personally, I experience a heat-sensation from the middle of the bones, especially the forearm/palm/yongquan (maybe the bone itself or the tissue around it where the meridians are), certainly not only the skin, although that feeling also remains. This heat is often substantial.

Whatever is happening I recommend not getting too caught up in the minutae of Qi and just continue to focus on cultivation generally, without any fanfare. Over time you're going to experience all kinds of sensations in your development, the main thing is understanding ultimately that Yi leads your Qi ... bottom line ... everything else is a distraction; eventually the form teaches you.
