Kung Fu ad "Ultimate" Fighting

Postby Sorcerer » Sat Aug 03, 2013 6:53 pm

Question: Why doesnt one see any more Kung Fu in fighting competitions? Is Kung Fu really as ineffective for self defense and against other styles as people say? What do you make of this topic?

A few reasons people tend not to rate kung fu VS MMA or some other arts.

1. Kung Fu is very broad in what it tries to cover, coversyl MMA and many other fighting arts such as mutai boxing or Taiquando are comparatively narrow so it much faster to become proficient in MMA than kung fu.
2. Kung Fu was historically about weapons and is well suited to deliver on this side unlike MMA however this can make it suboptimal for other needs.
3. MMA favours ground fighting and this has become popularised as being the way of judging a fighter in events like UFC, kung fu almost totally ignores it in most cases. I have seen absolutely no convincing case for ground fighting being a prominent self defence skill as the moment more than two people are involved it is utterly negated (not to say you should not practice it just that it should not be bread and butter of your strategy).
4. People who want to beat 7 bells out of people take up MMA, mutai or a military close combat system and are so more likly to apply their art while a true TMA practitioner will always try to avoid the fight.
5. People interested in the cultural and art side of martial art are less likly to wish to enter a cage to have someone who resembles a gorilla beat on them. Their reason for taking up kung fu may have little to do with fighting, the same can not be said for MMA.
6. Most kung fu practitioners do not train as hard as MMA practitioners or spar as much as they could.
7. Due to the Kung Fu boom in the 70's and the earlier problems with opium addiction there has often been a very poor transmission of skill.
8. Much kung fu is now more or less "flowery fists and embroidery kicks" and thus ineffective for fighting modern Wushu has added to this.
