Hung Gar vs Choy Lay Fut

Postby Sorcerer » Wed Jul 31, 2013 2:15 pm

I wanted to ask how dfferent Hung Gar is from Choy Lay Fut? I must say It hink I personally like Hung Gar a bit more but at the moment I only have access to a Choy Lay Fut school. Will my previous Hung Gar training be good for starting Choy Lay Fut? Will I be able to use some of my Choy Lay Fut training in case I switch to Hung Gar when I find a Hung Gar teacher?

They will have some similar stances. Kicks are still useful in both styles. Choy Lay Fut fists would work fine on a Hung Gar frame. They are not that similar styles but a lot from one style would be similar in the other and you could use all the techniques for both styles in sparing or combat. Chinese styles tend to share root movements.

Look at the hip movements and rotation. The use of the back fist before the punch is different (aditional) but the punch is the same.

My point is it would be better to be in a good Choy Lay Fut class than training Hung Gar on your own. Its not that unusual for people to have studied both styles.
