need some advice with training

Postby Sorcerer » Thu Jul 25, 2013 10:22 am

I am in a bit of a quandary and need some advice with this one. I studied "Southern Shaolin Five Animals Kung Fu" for about 3 years. In those 3 years I learnt a learnt one static form (The 18 Lohan HAnde) which I must have done about 150 times. I also learnt one form called Dopi Crane and another form called Dragon Tiger. I then got very sick and stopped training for about 5 years. now I am looking to start again. I found out recently that the name of the style my master teaches is in fact called Hung Gar (not Southern Shaolin Five Animals). At the moment I am going to a school where tey teach Choy Lee Fut and Do Pi. I find the Choy Lee Foot slightly counter intuitive and different fro what I got into when I was studying 5 years ago. Now I found another school that teaches Hung Gar but the teacher there doesnt want to teach me (he says that I am "not serious"). which isnt true, I just have a hard time with some things. So, I am trying to solve the issue but I need to seriously choose a style that I can learn and use the 3 years I already invested as a foundation. The Hung Gar Ive done feels very natural to me. There is another school that teaches "Quan Fa" (its more Shaolin) but very expensive. Any one have any ideas which style I should choose? I was hopin to do Hung Gar and learn it from DVDs whilst Im in a cottage for the next month ad then study with the Hung Gar teacher, but that might not be an option any more.....

Choy Lee Foot is a good style but if its not for you then its not for you. Shame about the Hong Gar teacher his discrimination makes him sound worth learning from. Are you shore you can't convince him?

Im sorry but I wrote the teacher a lengthy email and he didnt even reply. I dont think he has any real experience with my medical problems and I dont think it is Wise to make a conclusions about someones life without really looking at the data. I am angry now. I think I will learn Hung Gar from the WLE DVD series for the next 6 months and then contact him again. At the moment Im not really interested in learning from him and associating with his other students who are obviously way better people than me because they have an easy life.

Don't take it so hard or so personally. Its hard to convince some teachers to train you. You sometimes need an introduction if your not a poster boy for the ideal perspective student. It has always been that way with smaller less commercial teachers.
What is the Quan Fa like? Quan Fa could be almost any Chinese CMA and sometimes expensive is worth it especially if you only train once a week then at home. If the groups are small and the art solid traditional Wu Quan it might be worth a go.
