Gongfu and Buddhism

Postby Urgeist » Mon Jun 14, 2010 8:54 pm

I once saw a gongfu monk being interviewed. He said that Gongfu is like a hand with martial arts on the one side and buddhism on the other. Remove one side and you will no longer have a hand and hence Gongfu.

What could he have meant?

Help yourself so you may help others.

Enlightenment requires a great deal of time/energy. The physical body needs to be strong to have the longevity and vitality required?

By focusing on training and attitude of iron deep hits hard and blocks, the Hung style was well suited to the fight against the ships and the wetland. Today, its techniques are still surprisingly relevant and effective.

Even Buddha was a martial artist, he was born into the warrior caste and his teachings reflect this social role, despite how obscure it has become over time.

One must cultivate the body as well as the spirit, one cannot be had without the other. Buddhism without gongfu is incomplete.

Gongfu itself is just a term, one can have skill through practice without following a spiritual path, but one cannot follow a spiritual path without taking care of the body.

The symbols of buddhism are the sacred weapons of India, the bell, the vajra, the sword, the maala, the staff. They are not as symbolic as they are taken to be.
