Qi sao & pak sao

Postby tico » Sat Jul 19, 2008 2:39 pm

Hey

I saw wing chung is coming from the white crane style.

In wing chung you have Qi sao and pak sao. Do you have this in white crane too? ( or something like this?)

Yes, white crane does have chi sao (sticking hands) and pak sao (slapping hand)
The chi sao that you see in most Wing Chun Kuen demonstrations and video clips was developed by Yip Man, Yuen Kay-San and their peers. In other Wing chun systems that don't share their lineage's the chi sao is more like the pushing hands of white crane.

pan shou is the fighting forms in the YMAA shaolin curriculum, I don't know the English words for pan shou, it should be bridge hands but I'm not sure

Qiao(2) Shou(3): Bridge hands
Pan(2) Shou(3): Entangling (coiling, twisting) hands
Pai(1) Shou(3): According to the previous, it means "slapping hands". Pai(1) in Chinese does mean slapping or clapping. I've never heard this term used before though.

According to Dr. Yang, pan(2) shou(3) is supposed to be a little softer than qiao(2) shou(3) and focuses a bit more on the aspect of listening jing.. but ultimately, they are pretty much the same thing.
