Northern Longfist and Qigong?

Postby shawntaur » Wed Apr 30, 2008 4:28 pm

Is there any actual specific qigong for northern longfist? I found a school locally and the sifu said that at later levels he taught hard qigong. He said he was not familiar with nor taught small or grand circulation. I asked about 'san gong' or energy dispersion as a result of the training, and he said it was a myth and not true. I asked him if he trained a particular kindo of hard qigong (white crane, iron thread, etc.) and he said he didn't. I don't know what to make of this situation. I have seen him move his hand down in a very graceful and slow chop motion and break a board. I don't know what to think. Could some of the more experienced people on this board offer me some advice, because I really desperately want to learn a tradition style.

I appreciate your time,
Shawn

Long fist is a bit of a generic term used to describe a number of northern Chinese styles that have some general characteristics. There's huaquan, hongquan, taizu chang quan, chaquan, etc. and all these are lumped together under the umbrella term of long fist or northern shaolin.

But the more generalized term hides a bit of diversity between the different styles, sub-styles, and various teachers of the arts. So no, there isn't one specific qigong practice associated with long fist because there are in fact many versions of long fist out there.

Rather than expect this particular teacher to fit your preconceived notions, why not try to understand his particular style and judge his progress by the map he himself uses?

That way you can see if he has quality material or not.
