Rattan rings aren't used in all Wing Chun lineage's. I think that they are used for training chi sao positions without a partner. I did have some link to some Chinese clips of them being used but unfortunately the link has been broken. I have not seen rattan rings used in any other styles.

As far as I know they are not used in White Crane, although I'm no expert.

They can be used in the same manner. especially good for practicing 4 golden points and some hard chigung jin patterns. Use your imagination and you can find many different ways to practice.

DOM, do you think that rattan rings could be a useful training aid or just a gimmick? Have you used one? I have seen how they have been incorporated by some Wing Chun groups and it makes me shudder. What are the four golden points?

Yes, I think they can be useful how much I am not sure. I have only used them a few times. My training Partner has them but they are to large to use effectively. The size of the ones in the video look ideal. I can see them being useful to help condition the forearms against strikes ,strengthen the shoulder and torso as in hard chigung and to develop and practice sticking and sensing jins with out a partner. I can also see them being use for practicing some hard chigung and hard jing training drills and also to give one an idea and feel for their application. Four Golden points are the four basic striking zones. The rings can be used to practice upward covering, upward neutralizing repelling, downward following carry, and downward hook leading drills used to protect these areas. I am sure if one practices and ponders deeply one can come up with many more useful training drills besides these.
