Candle Watching?

Postby Yue » Sun Oct 07, 2007 1:37 pm

In the Long Fist book Dr. Yang says that by watching a candle with a calm mind your reflexes can be enhanced. Is this true? Because I haven't had much luck with this training.
Anything goes.

The upcoming DVD Understanding Qigong 6: Martial Arts Qigong Breathing has a brief section about candle training for martial artists.

Not much to tell...its just there to give people a basic understanding...

It says:
•Candle Training
•The candle is used to train mental concentration and visual focusing.
•Simply relax and watch the candle with a calm, meditative mind.
•Practice until you can focus your eyes on the candle
•flame and catch every detail of how the flame moves,
•with the mind concentrated for half an hour.
•At first, it can be hard to focus your attention
•on the candle for more than a few minutes.
•Over time, this training can help you with your
•patience, endurance, awareness and alertness.
•After you have reached the goal of watching the candle
•with a concentrated mind and focused eyes, place a real
•burning candle on some kind of swinging or moving platform,
•which can hold the candle while swinging.
•Then repeat the same practice, except this time the
•candle is moving instead of stationary.
•After you have practiced for a long time and you
•have reached the stage of concentration easily, start to move your
•body around the moving candle and again practice the same thing.
•Once you have gone through the above training, you will be able to
•bring your mind to a more concentrated level and your spirit will be raised.
•You may also use a real candle to train your Jin (martial power)
•to be penetrating and focused.
•Simply use the lit candle as a target for your Jin.
•Start from a distance that, when you extend your arm completely,
•the space between your fist and the flame is about five inches.
•Concentrate your mind and focus your punching power,
•punching at the flame and trying to extinguish it.
•Only if your power and mind are focused will the pressure and
•wind generated from the punch be able to extinguish the flame.
•After you have trained for a while and can extinguish 4 out of 5 times,
•then you should increase the distance between the fist and the candle.
•If you are able to extinguish the candle from the distance of one foot,
•then your power is very focused and penetrating.
•When this power is used to attack your opponent,
•your power will be able to reach deep into the internal organs.
•In the internal martial arts, the candle can also be used to train the
•concentration of the mind and the focusing of the Qi.
•When the mind is concentrated to a high level, the Qi will be led strongly.
•Sit in front of the candle and extend your second and the middle finger
•while touching your ring finger and pinky to the thumb.
•This sword hand form will allow the Qi to extend beyond the fingers.
•Place your extended fingers in front of the flame about two inches away.
•Without moving your hand, coordinate the breathing and
•extend your Qi beyond the fingers, trying to make the flame move.
•When your Qi, or bioelectricity is led to the fingers, it can generate a
•disturbance in the air and generate wind, making the candle flame move.
•Naturally, this takes many years of practice in the correct manner.

Divvid, very informative post. Thanks for the info. I'm still in my teens so I have trouble calming my mind, but I'll definitely try that stuff. I didin't know that was the purpose of the sword hand form. I thought it was used to "symmetrify" your qi flow with a narrow-blade sword (not sure where I read that).
Anything goes.
