As I have said several times on this forum.

Any style is only as good as the person doing it.

My first style of Wing Chun was Pien San which is the almost the same technically as Gu Lao WC.

Pien San

Postby silverfox » Mon Jan 29, 2007 4:05 pm

Hello,

Pien San is a derivative of Gulao WC created by the Fung Family which means side body positioning. Leung Jan taught 4 students his abbreviated version of WC. One of these students was of the Fung family where there was a strong following of the side body principle.

Leung Jan was already in his 70's and believed that good WC (based on his fighting experiences and age) was more decptive in attack and defense from the side as opposed to the front and center approach of his earlier days. Also he focused more on san sik or (hands on) style training as opposed to form training. He believed the student needed to have the information passed on through points and kinetic exchange of the points from teacher to student.

These 4 students eventually passed on the Gulao system, but the curriculum which focused on individual points or movements was interpreted in diverse numerical points according to each of the 4 teachers. This is why there are 12, 22, and 40 points in each respective system.

The system that I learned was the Fung Ga sup yee san sik system (AKA the 12 points of the Fung family) in relation to Fung Chun who taught his siblings. Hun Mui had studied Pien San under one of Fung Chun's siblings in Hong Kong before coming to America in the 1970's and teaching a small private group of students in Boston, MA.

Sifu Alix Lavaud was one of these original students and my first Wing Chun teacher whom I have an enormous amount of love and respect for as a teacher, friend, and fatherly mentor.

I hope this helps a bit.

Thanks,

Scott

Hello Navin,

I did not complete the system as my Sifu also did not complete the system, but that is another story.

Please PM me when you have a chance.

Thanks

Pien San

Postby silverfox » Fri Feb 02, 2007 9:59 pm

Hello Navin,

I had trained 8 of the 12 points and the chi sao drills, basic and advanced footwork, plus the dummy drills and triple sandbag routines. I was a closed door private student of Sifu Alix for 3-4 days per week training for 3-5 hours per day. That lasted for around 3 years.

My training with Sifu was very hands on and even though he had not finished the system he had honed what he had learned over his 25 years of training and teaching. The system I received was invariably different from what he had received since it became his own, but what he lacked in quantity, the quality of what and how he taught was at a much higher level than many of the other advanced level practitioneers of various Wing Chun styles I have worked with who did have whole systems but lacked the quality.

I was very fortunate to have received my Wing Chun foundation from such an incredible person like Sifu Alix.

Thanks for your interest!

Scott

Cho Ga Wing Chun Kuen
(Ban Chung, Malaysian, South East Asian)

A section from Siu Lien Tao (Little First Training)

GM Cheong Wai Bo and Eric Ling discuss Cho Ga
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IH5V5wjFAcI

Cho Ga Wing Chun Kuen (Caojia Yongchunquan), or the Wing Chun Kuen of the Cho family, combined the Wing Chun Kuen proper of Yik Kam (a four section Siu Lien Tao similar to the Siu Lien Tao, Chum Kiu, and Biu Jee of other lineages combined) with the Cho's Panyu village system (consisting of various southern fists like Choy Lay Fut, Hung Kuen, White Crane, etc.). In the early 1900s, it was spread by Cho On into Malaya (now Malaysia) where it was commonly referred to as Ban Chung (Ban Zhong, Inside Opera) Wing Chun Kuen. It has also been called Malaysian and South East Asian Wing Chun Kuen.
