Understanding Buddhism

Postby Sorcerer » Fri Apr 29, 2011 7:28 am

Hi everyone,

I was wondering whether people here could recommend books on Buddhism, since the religion has had quite an influence on martial arts and Id like to know more. Perhaps a general text that would be available at the library? It doesnt have to relate to martial arts explicitly.

thx

The Heart of the Buddha's Teaching, by Thich Nhat Hahn, is among my favorite books on Buddhism. It gives a good overview of some of the fundamental teachings of Buddhism in general.

Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind, by Shunryu Suzuki... is a great book in the Zen flavor.

Also, a cool site--- http://www.vipassana.com/

Buddhist books and references are plentiful. From books and magazines to "You Tube" and podcast, information is bountiful. I have been reading Budhhist text for over 12 years now and I can tell you that they all are worth reading. I have never read, hear or saw buddhist teachings that were not worth my time and effort.

I have been doing tai chi for a while and find it reinforcing my Buddhist beliefs and my tai informs my Buddhist practice. I have too many favorite books to name one. I would invest some time and scan your local library for reading material or surf the internet for hearing or viewing pleasure.

I think you will find it worthwhile and perhaps a lifelong habit.

Stay well.
