inquiry on becoming a monk

Postby connor » Sun Dec 12, 2010 10:40 pm

Would it be possible for a foreigner to become one in these times? To give up a life of luxeries for poverty and hardship in order to oversome themselves, make their morals and character sound, and get a greater understanding of the internal and external arts such as tai chi, chi kung, etc. Become a monk at a legitimate temple, none of the commercialized watered down stuff. If so how would one go about doing so? Where could he find such a place, and what advice would be wise to keep in mind?

What type of Monk? Its possible to become Monks in Asia as a westerner I know a former Zen monk and a former Hindu Monk.

Don't know any former Shaolin Monks or Taoist Monks but that hardly means you cant become one. I also know some Christian Monks and they are always trying to find new Monks as people in the west don't seem to want a life of contemplation and prayer.

For instance my WMAA teacher Mariusz Sroczyński was a Hindu Monk.

I was looking into becoming a taoist monk, since tai chi and meditation are already a large part of my life. I have some more reading to do on hindu monks .....would it be possible to do five year + eccuments? For example, work for my food, go into poverty, etc. and fully emmerse myself as a hinu monk for about five years, then backpack to another temple and become a monk there to learn their wisdom for five years or so, etc. Connection with my spirit and our energy is of crucial importance, I then wish to mend spirit with that of natures and what connects us all and share it. As for being a christian monk....I have absolutely no desire, though I believe in God and Jesus I have grown up in the religions of christianity and catholisism and have taken all that I can from them. Advice is welcomed, sudjestions on some good unbiased books or preferably short readings on this subject that could help me as well, I still have much research to do, thankyou=]
