Sorry Walter! Samurai Swords Now Illegal

Actually, I think it is only in the UK.

"Samurai swords have now become illegal weapons under long-awaited new laws.

Selling, making or hiring the elaborate Japanese-style blades now carries up to six months in prison and a fine of up to 5,000.

Higher penalties of up to seven years' imprisonment and an unlimited fine apply to people caught importing the swords.

However, collectors of genuine Japanese swords will be exempt, as will bona fide martial artists and historical re-enactment groups.

The date of the ban was first announced last December.

Home Office minister Vernon Coaker said: "The Government takes violent crime very seriously and we are determined to do all we can to protect individuals and communities.

"Having undertaken a wide consultation we recognise that it is the cheap and easily-available samurai swords that have been used in crime. That is why we have made sensible exemptions for genuine enthusiasts."

He added: "This ban is part of our wider strategy to tackle serious violent crime. Later this year we will launch a new advertising campaign aimed at preventing young people carrying knives."

Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) spokesman on knife crime and Deputy Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service, Alf Hitchcock, said: "These are not the most common weapons for people to carry and use in violent crimes, but nationally there have been some significant incidents, serious assaults and murders using a samurai sword. So we feel the introduction of a ban is much needed."

I think this is only illegal to those who don't have licensed. Exemptions will cover swords which are used for re-enactments or antique weapons kept on display by collectors.

Traditional Martial Artists are exsempt, realy anyone with a good reason to have one who is willing to buy a good one (not cheap) is ok. The problem is in the UK knife crime is totally out of control and the government wants to be seen to act.

They found parents of a boy who was killed by a cheap sword and exploited them, putting them on a high profile media friendly panel, drafted some poor legislation the voted it through with their majority. The usual very poor legislation put out by the @@@@@ who currently (for the next few weeks) run the UK.

It only takes a litle thingking to see that most killings happen with smaler blades you can hide, not massive blades you cant.
However stop and serch is seen to be a race issue (wrongly) so they looked for an easy target. This law has/will probably not save a single life. A kitchen knife is more suited to street crime.

:?

P.S. sorry to seem political but the ban really is more political than practical and this issue is close to my hart. :)

Will nails become illegal if too many people start using them as weapons?

No but they will ban bow staffs as they are clearly the same thing and much easier to ban lol. Been plenty of cases of builders ending up in front of a Judge for having tools. One man ended up on charges after buying a music stand in a music shop and walking out the shop. Police told him it was an offensive weapon. :)

people mistaken a tool for a weapon so, it depend how people will handle or use it. Even a ballpen can be a murder weapon.

Try telling that to target chasing uk police. They arrested a man leaving a music shop with a music stand for having an offensive weapon! And a unemployed man who dropped a £10 note for littering.

"He who would sacrifice liberty(freedom) for safety will not receive nor deserves either."~Benjamin Franklin

What silly non-sense. The current immaturity of the vast populace, particularly 'government' astounds me, and the things people let, yes dare I say LET it happen amuse me. Any one with a working conciousness immediately sees through such political immauturity.

I must say I share similar veiws to John the Monkey mind. As well as joeblast.

I myself live in the states, I know of the 'laws' but I do not follow beliefes, I follow a 'spiritual'(reality) path and if I so chose to develope my mind & body training with a REAL tool of self-defense/preservation I will by no means follow an ignorant mind frame. govern= to control ment= mentality/mind. Government only works because it institutes and governs(manipulates) its populace to have a certain mentality, an unnatural mentality. Ah ha ha excuse my rants, truth, but I rant ;)

Thanks for sharring! Perhaps one day they'll see fit to chop of the hands of accomplished practiitioners of gung fu/self-preservation.

When is England going to stop screwing over its good citizens in favor of violent Koranderthal invaders who threaten the Queen and scream that they are going to conquer and destroy England? I bet if the Brit police saw a Koranderthal with a scimitar, they would look the other way... or RUN AWAY crying like little girls.

Wait a second, doesn't this make just about anyone who would actually buy a genuine samurai sword with intent for peaceful use exempt from the penalties of this law? It would be interesting to learn their official definitions of "collectors of genuine Japanese swords" and "bona fide martial artists."

Sure thing. In that case, you could actually be excluded from any penalties regarding to this. But it doesn't mean that it would be a piece of cake going to be a real "Bonafide Artists" or sort of thing.
