"Some students applying DO have the support of their parents. Some also have the financial support of their families."

That's good to hear. I can just envision my own parent's reaction though if I approached them with something like this back when I was 17!!! I don't think that they would have gone for it.

SEPT 07
18 is the age that one starts to become an adult, and the exceptional individuals applying for the Retreat Center know themselves and are confident about the path they intend to take in life. Whether or not they have money, or support, they are training hard and showing their spirit to Master Yang with the hope of being accepted.

Only 6 months to go, until Master Yang will stop accepting applications:

correction. you have only until February of 2008 to apply. the intent of this is so that students who ultimately don't do the retreat center can still apply for college/university.

What master Yang is doing is great. In my 24 years of life I never heard of a master in the united states taking any students into the mountains for 10 years of training. This is an opportunity I wanted all my llike but sadly would not be able to participate in. I am married and have a 1 1/2 year old. I would find a way to come up with the money if I couldnt get a sponsor, one way or another. Since I cannot go I've decided to step up my own practice here and better myself without the help of a master such as Dr. Yang, and I hope that masters of his calliber in the future, (if there are any) make the same decision. Not only for the practitioners of their martial art, but for the future of martial arts in general. Dr. Yang is a great man and I deeply respect what hes doing. I sincerely hope I can reach his level of expertise in Taiji, and give other students the same opportunity.

The American way is investing in something but the problem is "Will my return on investment (ROI) in Dr Yang's training be worthwhile'? so it will be up to each individual to assess that point assiduously.
Dr Yang brings an excellent training regimen but are the students' ready for the challenge?

I wish I had a chance to do this.
I am 30 and have children, and cannot afford the prices involved for visitors.

I feel I could learn a great deal and contribute my specific knowledge in the same type of environment, it is my hope to be able to set up a similar project closer to home.

I have several books of Dr. Yang and find him to be a valuable resource, training under him would be ideal.

For all of us who wish we could be there, the students will post videos so we can get a glimpse inside the Center each year.

For now, we have this first look:

Hey, did you hear there was a 6.5 earthquake right near the Retreat Center this weekend?! But, everyone is fine. They only felt a slight tremor.

Anyway, here is a friendly reminder to go out there and see for yourself how great it is! It is inexpensive, well worth the cost, and one of the best ways to spend a week of your life, studying and training in the forest with a small dedicated group of like-minded students.

Summer 2010:

and check out testimonials from a bunch of the people who have visited so far: http://ymaa-retreatcenter.org/seminars/testimonials

BUT FIRST! Come to Boston during the next couple months, there are many great seminars each weekend!

Visitor pricing is very inexpensive. I wish I had somewhere to live (and train with a master) for $720 a month, or less.

News: The Retreat Center just received SEVIS approval as an accredited school, allowing us to issue, for the first time ever, a Masters Degree in Chinese Martial Arts!

More news: Dr Yang will accept five more students next year, to train in a 5-year program, Fall 2013 - Spring 2018.

This retreat center has really planted a seed in my head. I think of it often though I have never visited it and follow what news of it is posted on the YMAA website since the call for the first disciples to apply for the then 10-year program cirriculum.

I remember when I finished college I didn't really know what to do with myself. Those were my wilderness years I suppose - I think this stage is very common among men in the early-mid 20's.

Quite honestly I still don't know what to do with myself professionally, but I'm part of the working week now and have a marriage and a mortgage - and probably little ones in the not too distant future. I would not give up my life with my wife. It, however, makes me very happy that there is interest in this program and that Dr. Yang is dedicating so much of his resources to it. Also, I should be dontating some $$$ each year to the program...

Anyway, thinking back at a less than focused college career, I was working dead-end jobs and sort of wasted away until I finally decided that I would either join the military or the Peace Corps. My best friend and I were both hungry for a full-time program that would help (or let's face it "force") us to develop discipline so we decided to make this "leap" at the same time in our lives. Since he did not have a college degree or an associates degree that was needed for a Peace Corps program at the time, he joined the military. I applied to Peace Corps first and was invited to volunteer for an assignment in West Africa. It was a post in the bush and it was a great experience - but I'm not here to waffle on about it.

Still, if a 2-3 year program existed at the retreat center, it may be a godsend for mid 20-somethings who aren't quite sure what to do with themselves. It would be an experience that challenges participants to live and work with less, work hard, develop leadership skills, and pull their part of the weight of a traditional community. It will be interesting to see what the retreat center looks like in 25 years...

I hope to visit the retreat center one day and though running and promoting this project must take up 200% of Dr. Yang's time, I'm glad he still teaches seminars and keeps the gates of the retreat open for visiting students and even non-YMAA students. I will attend my first seminar with Dr. Yang in February and I'm really looking forward to practicing with him.
