though it only works with short words. I think that word with 3 or more syllables are more likely not to be understood.

Darth, may I ask if English is your second language? I wonder if we typed Jo's phrase in French if it would be the same effect. I had no trouble with any of the words, regardless of length. My grasp of reading French and German is limited at best, mostly I have to guess from context and reach for the dictionary. However if I was a bit more fluent (and Darth I think your English is wonderful), I wonder if it would be the same for me? Or put more simply, if I read Jo's piece in a second language, would I fare the same? This really fascinates me, how the brain works :)

Inga: It has to do with word recognition.

So when one's vocabulary is limited, it seems logically that the brain doesn't recognize these words at all.
