Pronunciation body, spirit

Postby pilotfish » Sun Nov 01, 2015 8:32 pm

Hi.

Dr Yang's book Tai Chi Qigong represents these two words with different Chinese symbols (very helpful). But it uses the same transliteration "shen" for both. For example, pg. 26 uses it for body and pg. 33 uses it for spirit.

I expect that the difference is in the vowel, but there is no diacritical mark to indicate ascending, descending, or high-low-high tones. I only know those three possibilities.

Can anyone enlighten me so that I can pronounce these correctly as I study this content?

Thanks.
Lew

Shén 神 spirit - resides at the upper dantian (the third eye)
Shēn 身 body - the physical body

Chinese word dictionary:

This dictionary is great because you can just type "shen" and see all the variant meanings depending on the character used.

Hope this helps!
