It is really all coming together then. :D
I'm intrigued by the volunteer student issue -- those not among the 15 selected students, as mentioned on the "Contribute" section.
Aside from the 15 candidates exclusively chosen for the 10-year training program, the Retreat Center will select "working students" who may join in the martial arts training, in exchange for volunteer work at the Center.

What would the process for this be like? Would such students just be joining into classes with the core students, or would they have separate, even "open" classes?
While my responsibilities and obligations prevent me from partaking in a program for 9months/year for 10 years (i.e., BSL and internal arts training, TCM schooling, etcetera) , a more feasible option for me could be to train for a few months here and there down the road just to study White Crane (barehand, staff and short weapons) and perhaps projectiles.
My guess is that such visiting students would have to join in with the core students, and just time their visits based on the curriculum schedules.

Hey, if I'm lucky, maybe in 10 years one of the graduates will come spread the arts in Vancouver, heh. :)

Select additional working volunteer students may be invited to stay at the Retreat Center as needed, and to join the training according to the curriculum trained at that time.

Retreat Center staff is currently focused on processing applications from interested candidates worldwide for the 10-year training program. Additional student volunteer faculty will be addressed at a later time when needed, for fundraising campaigns, etc.

Thank you.

What will happen to YMAA?

Postby bhession » Sun Jan 01, 2006 1:29 pm

I have to say the retreat center idea is a pretty cool one. So much knowledge being passed on, wow. What will happen to YMAA around the world, im curious. Is one of Master Yang's students to take over? Will Master Yang still be doing seminars though? This was probably answered somewhere else earlier but I cant seem to find it.

Master Yang will continue offering seminars, and will sometimes travel to teach. he is encouraging students to travel to train with him now, instead of the other way around. He has been traveling worldwide for 25 years, and is ready to settle in a bit at the Retreat Center. Talk to your nearest YMAA school director to inquire about going to CA to join in the training.

No Xavier. You will have to come to Boston to test. Only the other Europeans will be allowed to test in Europe. :P 8)

Honestly I don't know. I'll ask Master Yang if I remember.

It wouldn't be too big a problem for me...but if it is so, I think some won't have the time or money to get there. But I'm planing to go to Boston next year, in easter time.

how much money is it to train taiji, kung fu and sparring during two weeks?

The money part can be something you work out with Mrs. Yang. Give the school a call and find out. 617-524-8892

Master Yang has replied regarding the testing for stripes in Europe.

He will still travel to Europe once per year. However, it depends on what is going to happen with fundraising before the program starts in 2008.

Master Yang also says that even after he retires, YMAA will continue. There are plenty of qualified instructors who are able to offer the test. The requirement for testing is One Master, Two Instructors, or Three Assistant Instructors will be accepted to offer the test.

It is up to us to train hard, learn everything we can, and pass along this knowlege so that our YMAA family can continue to grow.

Thank you.

If you or someone you know qualify and have interest in being involved in this unprecedented project, please submit an application soon.

Applications are coming in from around the world, and some students have already been notified that they will be brought to CA for preliminary testing during 2007. We are working hard on securing the funding needed for the start of the 10-year program.

The application period is now CLOSED for "working student" applications. there are 3 other Student Application programs.

DETAILS: http://www.ymaa.com/retreat-center

The application can be viewed and downloaded here: http://www.ymaa-retreatcenter.org/files/questionaire3.pdf

Dvivid: I was very interested in the projected retreat centre, and I read all the details and viewed the application form. But I have to confess, I was a bit disappointed for two reasons: a) the retreat, as far as I can see, concentrates on Shaolin only and b) the age limit is very young. Well, I only do Tai Chi, and I'm older than the age limit, so that was that! But for these two impediments, I would have been seriously interested. Kind regards, T.

Hi Tarandus,

Yes, most of us are...beyond...WELL beyond the age limit, and it is disappointing to miss such an unprecedented opportunity, but the age limit is fundamental to the success of the program.

The training, which contains equal parts external and internal arts, will be more physically challenging than the usual, and at this younger age, recovery time and stamina will be optimal. Also, Dr Yang has mentioned that it is best to train at this younger age, or even younger, to "build the training into the body, as it develops".

If you know a qualified and seriously interrested student, please send them in our direction. Now is the time. The deadline for applications is June 30, 2007.

Here again is a peek at an excerpt of the curriculm, which will be expanded upon as the program develops:
